The number of U.S. breaches of personal information that could be used to commit identity theft so far this year has already passed the total for 2007.
According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, this year?s running total passed the 2007 mark of 446 on Friday, with more than four months to go.
Between January 1st and June 27th, the total number of data breaches recorded by the ITRC is 342, more than 69% greater than the same time period in 2007. The actual number of breaches is more than likely higher, due to underreporting, and the fact that some of the breaches reported, which affect multiple businesses, are listed as a single event.
Data Loss Source: About 1,500 customers of Horizon Air and Alaska Airlines were victimized by a former call center employee who stole their credit card information, according to Alaska Air Group, the airlines? parent company.

Data Loss Source: The Ministry of Justice has reported that around 45,000 people were affected in nine separate data loss incidents. The worst single incident was in June 2007 when 27,000 people working for department suppliers were affected after information from badly protected electronic storage devices was disclosed without authorization. The second most serious incident occurred in January 2008 when 14,000 people were affected due to a badly-protected laptop being stolen from secured government premises.

Wells Fargo Customers at Risk of ID Theft

Data Loss Source: Wells Fargo is notifying customers that hackers have accessed their confidential personal data by illegally using its access codes.

Additional Notes: The bank learned of the compromise on July 1 when MicroBilt, a reseller of consumer data, notified it of suspicious transactions made using the Wells Fargo access codes, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco-based bank said Monday. The codes are used by Wells Fargo employees to gain access to consumer credit data.
